Natural Weight Loss

by Fitness Advisor on 26/01/2010

Losing weight is a continual goal for many people, particularly in the western world where food is often too readily available. There are now so many diet systems and weight loss medicines available that making a choice sometimes seems impossible. In addition feedback about some of these diet systems and weight loss medications is not always positive. Some are not as effective as they claim to be while others may occasionally have side effects. Many people therefore start to seek some means of Natural Weight Loss because they see it as a much better approach.

Natural Weight Loss might be better described as a Natural Weight Lifestyle. The concept of ‘going on a diet’ is often defeating in its own right. Because a ‘diet’ is something that most people consider that they will ‘come off’ at some time in the future. In reality we are all on a diet all of the time. It is really just the food that we eat. However many of us tend to eat foods that are not as beneficial as others. And those eating these foods are not always to blame. It is not easy to determine exactly what our food contains. Some items on the supermarket shelves called ‘food’ do not appear to be very closely related to food at all – just read the contents on the label of some of them. One noted writer suggests that if there are more than five ingredients on the label then you are better to avoid them.

While experts in weight loss and diet programs are continually looking for the best possible answer to weight problems we as individuals can often help ourselves as well. By following some simple rules such as selecting more appropriate foods, eating more fibre, having smaller portion sizes and increasing our daily movement we can join in the trend to natural weight loss or a natural weight lifestyle.

What is Natural Weight Loss

As already noted natural weight loss is really about altering your lifestyle and eating habits to be more health orientated. By doing this and eliminating the less desirable aspects of many modern lifestyles you will feel more alive and satisfied. Many fad diets, ‘almost magic’ diet programs and medications available today often do not deliver on their promise.  If appropriately followed Natural Weight Loss will, over time, generally deliver as promised. It will teach you how to shed those extra pounds in a proper manner. In some cases it will advise you to do the opposite to that of a diet program. Under normal circumstances you will lose weight if you follow this longer term, weight loss approach.

One of the problems that most of us have is wanting to miraculously shed weight ‘overnight’ without putting in too much effort. It is this promise that many ‘weight gurus’ and diet programs use to entice you and then to sell their wares. It is generally much easier to believe in a weight loss plan that promises to  make you sexy and fit overnight than the reality of a more disciplined and longer term natural approach. But we should always remember that we did not gain the weight overnight so it is unlikely we can loose it overnight.

What is Natural Weight Loss

As already noted natural weight loss is really about altering your lifestyle and eating habits to be more health orientated. By doing this and eliminating the less desirable aspects

of many modern lifestyles you will feel more alive and satisfied. Many fad diets, ‘almost magic’ diet programs and medications available today often do not deliver on their

promise.  If appropriately followed Natural Weight Loss will, over time, generally deliver as promised. It will teach you how to shed those extra pounds in a proper manner. In some

cases it will advise you to do the opposite to that of a diet program. Under normal circumstances you will lose weight if you follow this longer term, weight loss approach.

One of the problems that most of us have is wanting to miraculously shed weight ‘overnight’ without putting in too much effort. It is this promise that many ‘weight gurus’ and diet

programs use to entice you and then to sell their wares. It is generally much easier to believe in a weight loss plan that promises to  make you sexy and fit overnight than the

reality of a more disciplined and longer term natural approach. But we should always remember that we did not gain the weight overnight so it is unlikely we can loose it overnight.

So how do we begin this Natural Weight Loss approach?

1. Know what you are eating.

Become more aware of what you food contains and learn how to be critical on what you eat. Read the labels but do not make it a major chore. Become more aware of food

classes rather than trying to analyse every ingredient on every package. One helpful suggestion is to shop around the perimeter of the supermarket. Many supermarkets have a

standard layout where fruit, vegetables and the less processed foods like meat, dairy and bread are stocked on the perimeter. Whereas if you go up and down the aisles you

come across all of the more processed and maybe more tempting foods. Key things to avoid are fats, sugars, salt and highly refined foods . One simple rule of thumb is to avoid

anything white!!

What you are looking for are foods that contain fibre and have less fat or energy content. This means more vegetables and fruit and less manufactured and refined produce.

Consuming more fibre will give you a fuller feeling for longer and you consume fewer calories. An apple is a better option than that supposed healthy food bar. Many of these bars

are touted as 99% fat free – which they may well be – but if you look at the energy (calories) it is still very high.

Prepare your food in a way that adds minimal extra to it in the process. The closer your food is to its natural state the better. This does not mean you have to eat everything raw

but where suitable simple steaming is better than frying. Leave the skin on if appropriate, don’t peel your apple or potato, eat the whole product – don’t juice it (it removes all the

fibre) and drink more water.

And one final tip know how much you are eating – make your portion sizes smaller. It is also sometimes valuable to keep a food diary for a couple of weeks to record what, when

and how much you eat – but you must be honest with yourself and record EVERYTHING.

2. Increase your movement.

Since the advent of our modern society, say the 1950′s, many people now do less physical work, have many labour saving devices, have access to cars but personally move

less. We also have many more options at the supermarket – some of them not so good. Taken in combination we find that people are consuming more energy (calories) but using

less of it in physical effort. So the nett result is that we take in more that we burn – and we all know what that means – an increase in weight.

Increasing your movement does not imply excessive workouts or an exercise regime. But you do need to increase the energy that you burn and reduce the intake. So simple

aproaches like cutting the lawns, changing the TV by hand instead of using the remote, getting things for yourself instead of asking someone else to get them and finally most

important go for a regular walk most days of the week. Distance rather than speed is the key – walking 2 to 3 miles (4 kilometeres) at a steady pass will work wonders.

3. Learn more about natural weight loss

There is a lot published, both online and in print, about natural weight loss. So whenever possible take the opportunity to learn more by reading on some of these articles. You can

find one very useful Natural Weight Loss program here.

Participate in on online foruums. These are online Internet communities where members talk (chat) about natural weight loss, its benefits and the resources availble to reduce

your weight naturally. Normally most people are genuine in these chat rooms but do exercise some caution regarding how much personal detail you provide

Visit websites that support the natural weight loss philosophy to get guides and support in your quest to reduce your weight naturally. Here is a great place to start.

4. Don’t believe in magic

When it comes to losing weight, there is no such thing as a magic solution. For most people patience and perseverance is what you need. Slow and steady wins the race. Rapid

weight loss is just not beneficial. In many cases it is only water that you loose and this quickly comes back

There are many ways for you to be fit in a natural way. You just have to know the resources available to you and then apply what you learn. If you persist you will become perfectly

fit while staying healthy. With natural weight loss, you don’t deprive yourself. Instead you learn what are the right quantities and the right time to eat them. Permanent fitness is the

promise of losing weight naturally. That’s right; you don’t have to worry about gaining weight again.

5. Measure your success.

We are often tempted to use the scales to measure our progress. Sometimes we use them so frequently that it becomes something of a ritual or fetish. Use your scales by all

means but not to excess. A better means of measuring success is the tape measure. Keep track of you waist line measurement and watch it change. Or even better use those

favourite pants that used to be able to wear – but cannot any longer. Try them on say once a week until that success day when they fit you again.
